Affirming Catholicism is an educational charity involved in various initiatives: publications, seminars, shared worship, retreats, pilgrimages, conferences. Most dioceses have there own local group to undertake similar projects themselves.
Our MembershipMembership of Affirming Catholicism takes three different modes: centrally at the national or international level, at the local level (mobilized by diocesan conveners) , and in synods such as the Church of England General Synod. Our founders remain Trustees, but our central structure is governed by a General Council which meets for a day conference annually every May or June, usually in Birmingham. Our movement is run by a partly elected Executive Committee, which meets in London. Our chairman is Father Stephen Conway. Our President is the Bishop os Salisbury. The Chairman of our Trustees is Prebendary John Gaskell. Our coordinator/executive is Mr. Tom Sutcliffe. E-mail enquiries about Affirming Catholicism in the British Isles can be sent to Tom Sutcliffe at [email protected].
The Objects of MembershipLocal Affirming Catholicism groups maintain their own mailing-lists (a small financial burden). Ideally supporters belong at both local and national level. Our office in London will put you in touch with your local diocesan convenor. Affirming Catholicism is by definition inclusive. Our main concerns are evangelizing and educational. We are now spreading the word - building membership and effectiveness. Our well-supported local activities include talks, eucharists, pilgrimages, quiet days, local conferences and seminars. Members at the national level receive our Journal with wide-ranging theological articles and reviews and also our Newsletter. We are strongly committed to preserving the unity of Anglicanism, in the face of arguments for a traditionalist Third Province. We are working to make the Catholic element within Anglicanism once more a positive and essential force for the Gospel, and a model for effective mission today. Fostering a renewed Catholic tradition and understanding will be costly for us all in time and money. Fully paid-up members on our central mailing-list are making a positive statement of missionary intent. Please join us in this challenge now.

How We StartedOur Trustees came together at the end of the 1980s conscious of being inspired and liberated by such "signs of the times" as the challenge of women's vocation to the traditional threefold ministry. They saw Catholic Anglicanism as then permanently defensive, negative and against everything - unable to acknowledge the distinctive independent traditions of Anglicans. A conference at St Alban's, Holborn on June 9, 1990, attracted widespread support and attention. Soon local diocesan Affirming Catholicism groups were springing up and an international Affirming Catholicism movement emerged. The objects of the movement (a registered educational charity) include publishing, holding conferences, theological research and development, and re sourcing local groups. A large conference at York University in 1991 set a pattern for similar events in 1993, 1995, and at Keble College, Oxford in 1998.
